I read this as preparation for a long vacation to Morocco. It is interesting and, despite the fact that the book is almost 100 years old, you can still transfer certain personality types and views of humanity quite well to the present time.

The stories and characters in the book offer valuable insights into the Moroccan culture and way of life back then. It allows the reader to gain a deeper understanding of the people and their traditions.

Even though the world has changed significantly in the past century, there are still universal themes and human experiences that remain relevant. The book serves as a reminder that, despite the passage of time, our basic nature and the way we interact with others have many commonalities.

Overall, it was a worthwhile read that enhanced my anticipation for my upcoming trip to Morocco and gave me a new perspective on the country's history and culture.

Devastating examination of the cultural/political blindness of westerners "touring" in the global south. This phenomenon reveals a profound lack of understanding and respect for the diverse cultures and political landscapes of the regions they visit. Westerners often approach these areas with a sense of superiority, failing to recognize the complexity and significance of the local cultures and political systems.

Fez is a city that has witnessed many historical upheavals. During a particularly turbulent time, the city became a focal point of various events and emotions.

Although the pace of events might have been a bit slow at times, the accounts and descriptions of this period are well-written and offer a fascinating glimpse into the different perspectives of the people who lived through it.

From the bustling markets to the quiet neighborhoods, every corner of Fez had its own story to tell. The writers of the time were able to capture the essence of the city and its people, painting a vivid picture of a place in the midst of change.

Their works not only provide valuable historical information but also allow us to understand the human experience during a difficult period. It is through these different perspectives that we can truly appreciate the complexity and beauty of Fez during a time of turmoil.

A Fatiguing Reading

The reading is fatiguing due to the slowness in the narration and the distance between the viewpoints - that of the young, pure-hearted Muslim, Amar, and that of the "tourist" English in this Morocco of the 1950s, strangely similar to contemporary atmospheres. However, the reader's patience, caught in the web spun by Bowles, will be rewarded with one of the best results: the awareness of truly knowing nothing about a world, and this is a first step.
Epigraph of the Book

In the epigraph of the book, there is this citation from the Quran: "Those who choose other protectors besides Allah are like the spider, and, alas, the house of the spider is the most fragile of all houses, but they do not know it."
Understanding at the End

I understood it at the end of the book, after having gone through all the possible nuances of not understanding each other.

I liked this book well enough.

However, I didn't find it enjoyable enough to say that I loved it as much as some others on this review list.

There were indeed some good perspectives presented within its pages.

But unfortunately, they were not sufficient to make me desire to read it again or to own it for myself.

The book had its moments, yet it failed to truly capture my heart and leave a lasting impression.

Perhaps it was lacking in certain elements that would have made it more engaging and captivating.

Nonetheless, it did offer some interesting ideas that were worth considering.

Overall, while I didn't have a negative experience with the book, it simply didn't reach the level of excellence that would have made it a favorite of mine.

I would still recommend it to others who might be interested in exploring the particular subject matter, but with the caveat that it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

None of the characters in this story are likeable, and the plot is not particularly strong, especially as it approaches the end.

However, it offers a very interesting perspective on how westerners navigate and misunderstand the intricacies of a Muslim society. The interactions between the two tourists and the details of their own thought processes are both fascinating and disturbing. Their relationship and ultimate manipulation of Amar also serve as a microcosm of the political situation.

This story is definitely thought-provoking. It made me question my own beliefs and experiences. It shows how our cultural biases and misunderstandings can lead to complex and often uncomfortable situations.

Overall, while the story may have its flaws in terms of character development and plot, it offers valuable insights into the challenges of cultural interaction and the importance of understanding and empathy.

Bowles once again achieved success with his third novel. It should be noted that spoilers will be included in this review.

In certain aspects, I have an even greater preference for "The Spider's House" compared to "Let It Come Down" and "The Sheltering Sky". There are profound events unfolding throughout, intensifying the sinister undertones and generating more surprises. This time, the characters explore their considerations of the natives in much greater depth. The omnipresent, foul-smelling cesspools are not burdened with severe disapproval. Well... now I'm simply describing the book.

What I aim to convey is that it offers yet another captivating perspective on colonial French Morocco at the verge of its end, presenting completely fresh angles that were not present in the previous books, thus adding another dimension to the time and place; naturally steeped in existentialism.

I pay particular attention to the endings of novels. Unfortunately, "Let It Come Down" was somewhat lacking in this regard, but here we have one of the most beautiful endings I have ever read.

The most enlightening aspect of Bowles' novels is the exposure of one's Eurocentric mindset. "The Sheltering Sky" was a total eye-opener for me in this respect. At this point, I must concede that Bowles earns the title of the most consistent writer I have read; I rate all three of his first novels quite highly, and the short stories only enhance the overall average grade.

He is a brilliant writer who merits any criticism outside of his literary works.

I just couldn't stand this book.

It was really a struggle for me to get through it.

However, there was one redeeming quality.

It did give me a rather good sense of what Fez was like during that particular time period.

This aspect was quite interesting and it actually saved the book from receiving a one-star rating.

If it hadn't been for that, I probably would have given it the lowest score possible.

But still, overall, my experience with this book was not a positive one.

I'm not sure if I would recommend it to others, despite that one interesting point about Fez.

Maybe someone who is really interested in the history and culture of Fez might find it more engaging than I did.

But for me, it was just an okay read at best.

This is an outstanding book.

I firmly believe that anyone planning to visit a country such as Morocco ought to read it prior to their departure. By doing so, they can acquire a certain level of understanding regarding the impact and influences they might have on the people they encounter casually.

It is essential to note that people should never be regarded merely as a tourist attraction.

The main characters in this book are unconsciously arrogant and naive. They are as blissfully ignorant as Europeans frequently are in Paul Bowles' books.

Moreover, the description on the book jacket is highly accurate, providing a concise yet comprehensive overview of the story and its themes.

Overall, this book offers valuable insights into the cultural and social aspects of Morocco, as well as the human nature and behavior of those who visit or live there.

I have just finished reading the last part, and I am truly left with a great sense of disappointment: what does it mean to me?

My opinion is definitely positive regarding the descriptions of the places and the culture (for example, I adored the night on the Bo Chta for the festival, even though I would really have hated the final rite

Maravilloso.

Conmovedor. These two words truly capture the essence of an experience that is both wonderful and moving.

When something is maravilloso, it fills us with a sense of awe and wonder. It could be a beautiful sunset, a breathtaking work of art, or a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

On the other hand, when something is conmovedor, it touches our hearts and emotions. It might be a powerful speech, a touching story, or a kind gesture from a stranger.

Combined, these two qualities create an experience that is truly unforgettable. It is an experience that makes us feel alive, that makes us appreciate the beauty and kindness in the world.

Whether it is a small moment of joy or a life-changing event, maravilloso and conmovedor experiences have the power to transform us and make us better people.

So, the next time you encounter something that is maravilloso and conmovedor, take a moment to soak it in and let it touch your soul.

You never know how it might change your life.

Good?

Yes yes, very good - The Worm

The worm is often overlooked, but it plays an important role in the ecosystem.

It helps to break down organic matter and recycle nutrients, making the soil more fertile.

Despite its small size, the worm has a remarkable ability to adapt to different environments.

It can survive in a variety of soil types and climates, and can even regenerate if it is cut in half.

The worm is also an important source of food for many animals, including birds, mammals, and reptiles.

Without the worm, these animals would struggle to find enough food to survive.

In conclusion, the worm may seem insignificant, but it is actually a very important part of our world.

We should appreciate and protect these little creatures for the important role they play in maintaining the balance of nature.
