I read this with the anticipation of obtaining concrete evidence regarding the influence of Set on the PGM. However, it mostly seemed to be a combination of wishful thinking and confirmation bias.

Similarly, I read it hoping that it would provide some practical basics for beginners. Nevertheless, I still suspect that it is unreliable and rather self-serving to the Setians of the Temple of Set.

Now more than twenty years old, this was Don Webb’s first occult book. It was to be followed by the enormously popular “Uncle Setnakt’s Essential Guide to the Left Hand Path.” However, this book has been less popular.

Partly, this is because it is more challenging, demanding a higher level of commitment from the reader. But it seems to me that the book is also less successful in terms of what it has to offer.

Webb was (and is) first and foremost a writer of fiction. I think trying his hand at long-format nonfiction proved to be a greater challenge for him than he might have expected. The book is divided into seven chapters that don't seem to be well-connected (more on this later). It lacks the intimate style that makes “Setnakt’s” so approachable. It even lacks Webb’s familiar numbered lists, one of his favorite ways to convey information in short, clear points.

Given that it is an attempt at a “scholarly” approach to its topic, it's also worth noting that it lacks citations or references of any kind. Although it includes an extensive bibliography and a list of “a few titles for your library” that is essentially an annotated, shortened version of the bibliography. The lack of footnotes can be frustrating at times because it's hard to know how Webb knows much of what he claims to know here. But in fairness, this is quite typical of occult publishing. Overall, the book is better edited than most of its genre, despite some typos and one particularly bad paragraph on page 75.

The topic of Webb’s inquiry is the “Typhonian” current of magic, which was practiced more or less underground during the decline of the Roman Empire by individuals who combined Greek and Egyptian mythology. As the then-High-Priest of the Temple of Set, Webb is particularly interested in the central figure of Set-Typhon, a combination of a Greek Titan with the Egyptian god who killed Osiris and became associated with “evil.” He also claims that many of the spells involve the magician transforming himself into the god-figure and thus finds the tradition to be resonant with current Left Hand Path thinking. But this is one of the parts that could use clearer documentation. Webb’s sources are mainly published translations of magical papyri that are not generally considered “important” by researchers but have been used as exemplars or translation exercises for students.

For me, the most interesting chapter was chapter seven, in which Webb provides a commentary and analysis of a spell from a papyrus. Here, giving a careful word-for-word transcription of his original source (the Bremmer-Rhind papyrus), he offers some reproducible research and unique interpretations, as well as insights into the particular nature of his magical work with the Temple of Set. He offers new insights into the “Aeonic Word” upon which the Temple was founded and suggests new directions in which it might (and since has) be interpreted. This historical insight will remain of interest to anyone interested in late-20th-century occultism, even though the rest of the book seems less useful and more quickly dated to me.

Couldn't put it down. This phrase truly encapsulates the experience of reading this remarkable piece of work. It is a real page-turner that grabs your attention from the very first page and refuses to let go.

The book's setting, divided into 7 rather unconnected chapters, didn't drive me crazy, nor did the particular mindset of the Setians. However, it must be recognized that it's the first book dedicated to Set-Typhon that I've read, of a purely practical nature and not "historical/archaeological". Consequently, I look upon the writing with sympathy, even though I don't identify with some theoretical definitions. At the same time, it seemed to me that the author distorts the mythological/historical reality a bit in order to enhance his hypotheses about his cult.

The reason why the stars are 4, though, is due to the fact that it contains translations from the PGM, with a focus on Set-Typhon. This alone, in itself, is a valuable point. Praiseworthy is the fact that alternatives are given to ritual elements that are no longer socially acceptable today (and that I personally wouldn't want to accept anyway). Another appreciated bonus: the recommended books and a rich bibliography on the subject.

The book is also really short (93 pages) and, ultimately, the price on the Italian market for the text seemed a bit high to me. At the same time, for those researching this particular figure, it's a step to take, but with a strong background that allows one to sift through and construct one's own personal vision.
