This is a magnificently written book crafted by a master storyteller, bringing to a close Bryce Courtenay's astonishing trilogy on early Australia.

"Solomon's Song" spans from Sydney in 1861 all the way to the battlefields of France in 1916. It meticulously details the First World War from an Australian perspective, while also continuing the captivating saga of the divided Solomon family. Courtenay flawlessly captures the essence and strength of a young nation maturing and coming of age. He pens characters that are so vivid and engaging that any reader is bound to fall deeply in love with them.

However, my only criticism is that Courtenay dedicated an excessive amount of time to rehashing the characters and events from the first two books. I do understand the reasoning behind his choice, but if someone didn't take the trouble to read "The Potato Factory" and "Tommo and Hawk," they truly don't deserve to lay their hands on "Solomon's Song."

Just read it, for goodness sake! It's a literary gem that shouldn't be missed.

A good, engaging read. It may not reach the same heights as The Potato Factory or Tommo and Hawk, but it still manages to captivate the reader. The story has its own charm and appeal, drawing you in with its interesting plot and well-developed characters. Although it may not be on par with those other masterpieces, it offers an enjoyable escape into a different world. You'll find yourself turning the pages, eager to see what happens next. It's a testament to the author's skill that they can create a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Despite its flaws, this book is definitely worth a read for anyone looking for a good story.

I truly enjoyed this trilogy. It provided a fascinating insight into the history of the Brits in Australia.

Through the eyes of the Solomon family, we witnessed both the good and bad impacts they had on the country.

The story was heartbreaking at times, as we saw the struggles and hardships that the family endured.

However, it was also uplifting, as we saw their resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

Overall, this trilogy was a powerful and moving exploration of Australia's past, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the country's history.

Good Follow Up

This particular piece served as a truly good continuation to the works of Thomson and Hawk. The engaging thread of the story was smoothly carried on, captivating the readers' attention from start to finish. What's more, the introduction of new characters added an exciting dimension to the narrative. These new individuals not only extended the timeline of the family but also brought in fresh perspectives and storylines. It was as if a new chapter was being opened, filled with possibilities and intrigues. The seamless integration of the old and the new made this continuation a remarkable addition to the overall body of work. It left the readers eager to discover what further developments and adventures awaited the family in the future.

Solomon’s Song, by Bryce Courtenay, is a captivating audiobook.

Narrated by Humphrey Bowers and produced by Bolinda Audio, it can be downloaded from audible.com. This is the third installment in the Potato Factory trilogy, which is set in Australia from approximately 1840 to 1916.

Humphrey Bowers' narration truly enhances the book. I firmly believe that these books would not have had the same impact if not for his excellent delivery. In this third book, we continue to follow the lives of the two families, the Solomons and the Tinklemans. Courtenay demonstrates remarkable skill in writing war narratives, and a significant portion of this book is dedicated to World War I and the Australian regiments that participated in it.

However, there is one aspect of Courtenay's books, at least in this trilogy, that I don't particularly like. They all conclude on a sad note. I won't disclose more details as it would involve spoilers. But the endings of each book are extremely abrupt, leaving the reader with a sense that there should be another volume to provide further insights into what happened next.

Overall, Solomon’s Song is a thought-provoking and engaging audiobook that offers a unique perspective on Australian history and the lives of its people.

This book is truly a real page-turner. From the very first page, it grabbed my attention and refused to let go.

The story was so engaging and filled with twists and turns that I found myself completely immersed in it. I just couldn't put it down!

Every time I thought I had figured out what was going to happen next, there would be a new development that would surprise me. The characters were well-developed and believable, and I found myself rooting for them throughout the entire book.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery or thriller. It's one of the best books I've read in a long time, and I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next.

I just wasn't that interested in World War I.

The way the Solomon's lives played out didn't really appeal to me either.

However, when it comes to my favorite works, "The Power of One" and "Potato Factory" definitely stand out.

"The Power of One" is a captivating story that explores themes of personal growth, perseverance, and the power of the human spirit.

The protagonist's journey from a young boy facing numerous challenges to a strong and confident individual is truly inspiring.

"Potato Factory," on the other hand, offers a unique and engaging perspective on a particular era and setting.

The story is filled with interesting characters and a richly detailed plot that keeps the reader hooked from beginning to end.

These two works have left a lasting impression on me and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a great read.

Here are some truly fine moments that I thoroughly enjoyed while reading this trilogy once again.

It takes one on a remarkable voyage that spans over 100 years, starting from the slums of London and leading all the way to the prison in Van Diemen's island.

We get to visit Australia and NZ, experiencing life among the Maori. We follow the adventures of Mary Abacus, Thomo, and Hawk, and then continue with Ben and Joshua on the battlefields of Galipoli and France.

The 2000 pages of this trilogy are filled with real and engaging storytelling that keeps the reader hooked from start to finish. It's like embarking on a journey through time and different cultures, experiencing the joys and sorrows of the characters along the way.

Each page is a treasure trove of emotions and experiences, making this trilogy a must-read for anyone who loves a good story.

I find this a difficult review to write.

As I am a great admirer of Bryce Courtenay's storytelling. His works such as The Potato Factory and Tommo & Hawk were absolute masterpieces that I adored.

However, this book just didn't have the same impact on me.

The first two-thirds of the story follow Victoria and Ben, Tommo's grandchildren. But I couldn't establish the same connection with them as I did with the previous characters in the first two books. I craved to know more about Hawk and his beautiful soul.

The latter part of the book focuses on the Gallipoli invasion and war. It is told with the historical accuracy and attention to detail that I have come to expect from Courtenay. But for my taste, it went on for too long. I found myself losing interest in Ben's tales and longing for the characters of Mary, Tommo, and Hawk from the previous books.

Moreover, the ending was just too abrupt and not at all what I had anticipated.

Overall, it is an enjoyable and well-written conclusion to the trilogy, but it doesn't come close to the excellence of the first two books.

It is truly incredible that a simple series of words can be strung together in such a way as to create something that is so deeply affecting and astonishingly real.

Each word, like a tiny building block, combines with others to form a structure that has the power to touch our hearts, stir our emotions, and transport us to different worlds.

Whether it's a beautiful poem, a captivating novel, or a moving speech, the right combination of words can have a profound impact on us.

They can make us laugh, cry, think, and feel. They can inspire us to take action, to dream bigger, and to believe in ourselves.

The art of using words to create something meaningful is a gift that few possess, but it is one that has the potential to change lives and make a lasting impression on the world.

My first and only reading venture in the three-part Potato Factory experience was truly an eye-opener. Fortunately, this book provides an adequate introduction to the two families, so an experience of the earlier two books is unnecessary.

The author has done an excellent job in writing and researching this story. The details are vivid and engaging, making it a pleasure to read.

One of the most interesting parts of the book is the very colorful account of the Gallipoil landing. It brings to life the excitement and chaos of that moment, allowing the reader to feel as if they were there.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a well-written and engaging story. It is a great addition to the Potato Factory series and stands on its own as a captivating read.
