I'm truly glad that I finally got around to reading Cheever. It was an experience that left a lasting impression on me. This particular book was more than enough to pique my curiosity for more of his works. The way he weaves his stories, the vivid characters he creates, and the rich descriptions he uses all combine to make for a captivating read. I found myself completely immersed in the world he has crafted, eager to see what would happen next on every page. It's rare to come across a book that has such an immediate and profound impact on me, but Cheever's writing has managed to do just that. I can't wait to explore more of his literary treasures and see where his words will take me next.

John Cheever didn't pen the renowned line regarding lives of quiet desperation, yet he very well could have.

I once held the belief that all of Cheever's stories were identical - merely another account of upper middle class turmoil, martinis, and lawn parties.

Strangely enough, in these times, these stories appear to be far more diverse and relevant to me.

Please, pass the martinis.

Cheever's works, upon closer inspection, reveal a complex tapestry of human emotions and experiences.

His characters, often被困 in the trappings of their social status, grapple with inner conflicts and unfulfilled desires.

The martinis and lawn parties serve as a backdrop to the real drama unfolding within their lives.

Perhaps it is my own evolving perspective that has led me to appreciate the depth and variety of Cheever's stories.

As I look back on them now, I see not just a collection of tales, but a reflection of the human condition.

So, here's to John Cheever and his remarkable body of work.

And please, keep those martinis coming.

I was cleaning the house when I listened to the audiobook. These two short stories are not only gripping but also lovely. They are so engaging that your attention won't wander easily, which is a common risk when listening to an audio book. Even if your mind does wander for a minute, once you realize how good these stories are, you will definitely cue back to the beginning to catch every single word. And let me tell you, Meryl Streep's reading of "The Enormous Radio" is simply fantastic. Her performance brings the story to life in a way that makes me actually feel sorry for those who read this story in print instead of listening to her tell it. It's like she adds an extra layer of magic to the words, making the whole experience truly unforgettable.
