This was just not my typical book.

I read it because someone was kind enough to loan it to me.

I do read some novels, but just generally not ones like this.

It was an awfully slow book and difficult to get through.

The plot seemed to drag on and on, lacking the excitement and pace that I usually look for in a good read.

The characters didn't really come alive for me either, and I found it hard to connect with them on any level.

Despite my best efforts, I often found my mind wandering while reading this book, which is a sure sign that it wasn't holding my attention.

I'm not sure if it was just a matter of personal taste or if there were other factors at play, but unfortunately, this book just didn't do it for me.

I'm glad I gave it a try, but I don't think I'll be recommending it to anyone else.

Not a favourite by any means.

I have always been intrigued by reading immigrant stories, particularly those from communist countries. However, I was rather disappointed to find this particular story to be extremely crude and vulgar.

Simultaneously, I dedicated a significant amount of time to sorting out my emotions regarding the characters, the book itself, and the immigrants who are supposed to be represented by this story, even to a mild extent.

Does the fact that it invoked so many of my emotions signify that it was a well-written book? I truly don't know.

Perhaps it was the rawness of the narrative that affected me so deeply, or maybe it was the way the author presented the experiences of the immigrants.

Either way, I was left with a complex mix of feelings that I am still trying to untangle.

I had hoped for a more profound and nuanced exploration of the immigrant experience, but instead, I was met with a story that seemed to rely more on shock value than on substance.

Nevertheless, I cannot deny that it did manage to evoke a strong emotional response from me, which is something that not all books are capable of doing.

Whether this is a good or bad thing, I suppose only time will tell.

My first encounter with the work of Hijuelos, the Cuban-American author, was truly an eye-opening experience.

The book I read was a remarkable meditation on various aspects such as family, the experience of being second generation, and the lingering ghosts of home and beloved parents.

The novel delved deep into the complex portraits of the central characters' parents. They had endured suffering, and unfortunately, they also caused pain to each other and their children. However, amidst all the turmoil and hardships, there was still love present.

This exploration of the human condition, with its mix of pain and love, was both poignant and thought-provoking. It made me reflect on my own family and the relationships within it.

After reading this book, I am now eagerly looking forward to delving into more of Hijuelos's work. I have a feeling that each of his novels will offer a unique and profound perspective on life, love, and the human spirit.

I can't wait to see what other literary treasures he has in store for readers like me.
