Having read these 4 novels one after another, I was completely engrossed and couldn't have even considered picking up another novel until I had finished. It doesn't matter whether you like or dislike Rabbit; the writing is truly what it's all about. The author's ability to bring the characters and the story to life is remarkable.
Personally, I liked Rabbit and all his failings. Updike is possibly the most honest author I have ever come across, especially when dealing with the male experience. Rabbit thinks as many men think, regardless of whether they are poor, from the rust belt in America or not. Male readers who claim they haven't thought along similar lines at one time or another are probably lying to themselves. I'm not suggesting that we are all exactly like Rabbit, but rather that there are elements of him in all of us men. His flaws and insecurities make him a relatable and complex character.
Overall, these novels offer a deep and thought-provoking look into the human condition, particularly the male psyche. They are well-written and engaging, and I would highly recommend them to anyone interested in exploring these themes.
