It was not nearly as enjoyable or as illuminating as I had initially hoped. I would venture to say that this is really only for the most hardcore of Dickinson fans. The content mainly revolves around her daily life, family affairs, and the various happenings among her relatives and friends. It is often as cryptic as her poetry, which can make it a bit of a challenge to fully understand. However, despite all of this, for some reason, I do feel a bit closer to her after having read it. There is something about delving into the details of her life, no matter how mundane or mysterious they may be, that gives me a greater sense of connection to this remarkable poet.

Moreover, these letters possess a poetic quality that is simply enchanting.

Their language flows like a beautiful melody, captivating my heart and soul.

Overall, these letters have had a profound impact on me, making me want to write tons of letters of my own, expressing my thoughts, feelings, and dreams.

Certainly, access to her books and blooms is more than enough reason for reading these selected letters. However, the insight provided into her poetry, philosophy, and life as an iconoclastic woman of the 19th century is truly astounding. This collection of her letters is not only for scholars of Emily Dickinson but also for any reader who wishes to immerse themselves in the wit and wisdom of one of America's premier poets.

Documenting important familial and scholarly correspondences, Johnson's text offers ample notes about her relationships with Austin and Lavinia Dickinson, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Samuel Bowles, and Otis Lord. Additionally, he provides (for the first time in paperback) the complete text of the "Master" letters – which alone is worth the price of admission.

These letters dispel the myths of Emily as a reclusive poet. Instead, they paint a vivid picture of her as a woman who is reaching out to a world that she seems to know will judge her for her beliefs and desires. The comprehensive portrait evidenced in these letters makes this an excellent collection.

I really like Emily Dickinson. Her works are full of unique charm and profound thoughts.

However, at times, I find myself a little bored with her poems, although there are indeed many brilliant passages.

Her writing style is so distinct that it can be both captivating and challenging.

One of her famous quotes is "Con qué sencillez llega al fin lo Insondable" which means "With what simplicity the unfathomable arrives at the end".

This quote reflects her ability to express complex and deep ideas in a concise and straightforward manner.

I encourage everyone to read her poetry and discover the beauty and wisdom hidden within her words.

You will be amazed by her talent and the unique perspective she offers on life and the world.

I didn't get what I was looking for. There were lots of letters between ED and her editor.

However, her letters are lovely. They are filled with charm and personality.

It's a pity that we simply won't see correspondence like that anymore. In today's digital age, communication has become so different.

Emails and text messages have replaced the handwritten letter.

There's something special about a letter that is written by hand and sent through the mail.

It shows that the sender took the time and effort to put their thoughts and feelings on paper.

ED's letters are a reminder of a bygone era when communication was more personal and meaningful.

Although we may not be able to experience that same kind of correspondence today, we can still appreciate the beauty and value of it.

After reading "Wars Laid Away", it becomes significantly easier to peruse Emily's letters.

This is because the book reveals more profound insights into her personality and health.

Previously, I had a certain perception of Emily, but now, after delving into this work, I find that she was exceptionally cheeky.

Her letters seem to come alive with a new vitality, as if I can see her mischievous smile and hear her playful tone.

The additional details provided in "Wars Laid Away" give a more complete picture of Emily, making her a more vivid and engaging character.

It's as if a veil has been lifted, and I can now better understand the woman behind the letters.

This newfound understanding not only enhances my enjoyment of reading her letters but also deepens my appreciation for her as an individual.

Overall, "Wars Laid Away" has proven to be a valuable addition to my exploration of Emily's life and correspondence.

Emily Dickinson is truly one of the most mysterious figures in the realm of Literature.

I have always been filled with an intense curiosity about her. Her life was nothing short of incredible and extraordinarily different. Little by little, she secluded herself within the walls of her house, yet managed to pen amazing poetry that remained unpublished until after her death.

I found great delight in these letters as they offered me a precious glimpse into the life of that woman who left an indelible mark on Literature, and yet, so little was known about her. I thoroughly loved reading about her relationships with her siblings, her sister-in-law, and her supposed love interests and so forth. I am always extremely curious about the lives of the authors I admire, especially those like Emily Dickinson or J.D. Salinger, who actively shunned public life. It is simply mind-boggling.

I have a strong inclination to know that an author is, in some way, a real person. I obtained that very feeling from this book. Emily Dickinson was undoubtedly a genius (and there is no possible way to refute that), but she was also a woman with friends and family, someone who might have fallen in love on more than one occasion. She lived, despite her self-imposed seclusion and the secrets she held dear. And I truly cherished the opportunity to get to know her a little bit more.

MR. HIGGINSON,--
Your kindness truly deserved an earlier expression of gratitude from me. However, I was unfortunately ill, and that is why I am writing to you today from my sickbed.

Thank you for the surgery. It turned out to be not as painful as I had initially supposed. As you requested, I bring you others, although they might not be very different. When my thoughts are in their raw state, I can make distinctions among them. But once I put them into words, they seem to look alike and lose their vividness.

You asked how old I was. I had not written much poetry, just one or two pieces, until this winter, sir.

Since September, I have had a terror that I could tell to no one. And so I sing, just like the boy does by the burying ground, because I am afraid.

You inquire about my books. Among poets, I have Keats, and Mr. and Mrs. Browning. For prose, I have Mr. Ruskin, Sir Thomas Browne, and the Revelations. I did go to school, but in your sense of the phrase, I had no real education. When I was a little girl, I had a friend who taught me about Immortality. But he ventured too close himself and never returned. Soon after, my tutor died, and for several years, my lexicon was my only companion. Then I found another friend, but he was not satisfied that I be only his scholar, so he left the land.

You ask about my companions. Hills, sir, and the sundown, and a dog as large as myself that my father bought for me. They are better than human beings because they know things but do not tell. And the noise in the pool at noon is more beautiful than my piano.

I have a brother and sister. My mother does not care much for thought, and my father is too busy with his legal briefs to notice what we do. He buys me many books but begs me not to read them because he fears they will jumble my mind. They are religious, except for me, and they address an eclipse every morning, whom they call their "Father."

But I am afraid my story is tiring you. I truly would like to learn. Could you tell me how to grow, or is it something that cannot be conveyed, like melody or witchcraft?

You speak of Mr. Whitman. I have never read his book but was told that it was disgraceful.

I read Miss Prescott's Circumstance, but it followed me in the dark, so I avoided her works.

Two editors of journals came to my father's house this winter and asked me for my thoughts. When I asked them "why," they said I was stingy and that they would use my thoughts for the world.

I could not measure myself. I felt small in my own eyes. I read your chapters in the Atlantic and felt a sense of honor for you. I was sure you would not reject a trusting question.

Is this, sir, what you asked me to tell you? Your friend,

E. DICKINSON.

Cuanto más leo sobre Emily Dickinson, menos creo saber.

Her life was a mystery, filled with solitude and a unique way of seeing the world.

She wrote thousands of poems, yet only a handful were published during her lifetime.

Her words are like precious gems, hidden within the pages of her notebooks.

As I delve deeper into her works, I am constantly amazed by her creativity and depth of thought.

But the more I learn, the more I realize how little I truly understand.

There are still so many questions unanswered, so many aspects of her life and art that remain a enigma.

Perhaps this is what makes Emily Dickinson so fascinating.

Her poetry invites us to explore our own emotions and experiences, to look at the world from a different perspective.

And in doing so, we may just catch a glimpse of the genius that was Emily Dickinson.
