I read a recent story by Wolff in The New Yorker and truly liked it.

Consequently, I thought I'd give one of his collections a shot.

Aside from "Desert Breakdown, 1968", which I would rate a 5, and perhaps one other story that I'd give a 3, the remainder of the stories simply did nothing for me at all.

It was quite disappointing as I had high expectations after enjoying that one story.

I had hoped that the collection would be filled with equally engaging and thought-provoking tales.

However, it seems that not all of Wolff's works resonate with me in the same way.

Maybe I just need to explore more of his writing to find those hidden gems that will truly captivate my imagination.

Nevertheless, this experience has made me more cautious when approaching new works by an author, even one whose previous work I have enjoyed.

The world of stories is similar to all. I mean the feeling and the impression they leave, not their location and their story. Most of them have a moment of discovery and witnessing that may happen simultaneously for the main character and the reader and are narrated in a way that it seems like a genuine form of storytelling.

Stories have the power to transport us to different worlds, make us feel a range of emotions, and connect us with the characters on a deep level.

Whether it's a fictional tale or a true story, the impact it has on us can be profound.

The way a story is told can also make a big difference. A well-written story with engaging characters and a captivating plot can keep us hooked from beginning to end.

In conclusion, the world of stories is a wonderful and diverse one, full of endless possibilities and opportunities for us to explore and discover.

There's a rather vague 70's or 80's feel to it,

akin to that particular coloring that was so characteristic of 70's movies.

Surprisingly, this is a good thing.

It's a collection of short stories that are very solid and unpretentious.

The simplicity and authenticity of these stories are truly captivating.

I find myself longing for more works by Tobias Wolff.

It's not something seedy or overly complex,

but rather something that feels like a cousin to those classic 70's and 80's literary works.

There's a certain charm and warmth to it that makes it a pleasure to read.

Each story seems to offer a unique perspective on life,

told in a way that is both engaging and relatable.

I can't wait to see what else Tobias Wolff has in store for us.

This is the fourth work that I have read by Wolff.

Curiously, it is only the first of his story collections.

In this 1985 collection, there is a hint of Raymond Carver.

The characters in these stories often find themselves falling short of achieving their dreams.

For instance, there is the Vietnam vet who discovers that "being back in the world" (the U.S.) as a private first class after twenty years in the army is not quite what he had expected.

There are some excellent pieces in this collection.

However, "The Night in Question" (1996) appears to receive stronger reviews overall.

Perhaps Wolff's writing has evolved and matured over the years, resulting in a more highly regarded collection in 1996.

Nonetheless, this 1985 collection still offers readers an interesting glimpse into Wolff's early work and his exploration of the human condition.

It will be interesting to see how his subsequent collections compare and contrast with this one.

Books like this are truly the reason why I have such a passion for reading. They have the power to transport me to different worlds, introduce me to a plethora of characters, and expose me to a wide range of ideas and emotions. When I pick up a book like this, I know that I am in for a treat. It's not just about the words on the page; it's about the experience that comes with it. The way the author weaves the story, the details that are included, and the overall atmosphere that is created all contribute to making it a memorable read. I can get lost in the pages for hours on end, completely forgetting about the world around me. Reading books like this allows me to expand my mind, gain new perspectives, and simply enjoy the beauty of language. It's a hobby that I will always cherish.

This collection of short stories truly failed to meet my expectations. I had not read a great deal of Wolff's work before, but based on his reputation, I had high hopes. Out of the ten stories in this collection, I found only one to be truly outstanding: "Desert Breakdown, 1968."

Just like in many of Wolff's other stories within this collection, this particular one centered around a young discharged soldier. He was faced with a difficult choice: should he pursue a career in the entertainment industry or remain loyal to his pregnant German wife and young son? The story was filled with great tension and numerous emotional highs and lows.

However, I was rather put off by the repetitious sentence rhythms that Wolff employed. I often had the distinct feeling that I was reading lists of sentences that all followed a similar pattern. Despite only awarding it two stars, I must admit that the day after I completed it, many of the images and symbols from the stories (even those that I didn't care for very much) managed to infiltrate my thoughts and linger there for several days. It seems that Wolff's work, for all its flaws, still has a certain power to make an impression.

**Title: Exquisite**

Exquisite is a word that holds a certain charm and allure. It describes something that is of the highest quality, delicately crafted, and possessing an almost ethereal beauty.

An exquisite piece of jewelry might be adorned with the finest gemstones, carefully cut and set to perfection. The details are so intricate that they seem to tell a story of their own.

A gourmet meal can also be considered exquisite. The presentation is visually stunning, with each dish arranged in a way that is both artistic and appetizing. The flavors are a harmonious blend, tantalizing the taste buds and leaving a lasting impression.

Exquisite can also describe a work of art. Whether it's a painting, a sculpture, or a piece of literature, it has the power to captivate and inspire. The artist has poured their heart and soul into the creation, resulting in a masterpiece that is truly one-of-a-kind.

In conclusion, exquisite is a word that represents the very best in quality, beauty, and craftsmanship. It is something that is rare and precious, and should be cherished and admired.

Interesting short stories with sympathetic characters can truly capture our hearts and imaginations. These stories often present us with characters who face various challenges and difficulties in life, yet manage to evoke our empathy and understanding.

For example, there might be a story about a young girl who grows up in a poor neighborhood but dreams of becoming a famous artist. Despite the many obstacles in her path, such as lack of resources and support, she remains determined and pursues her passion with unwavering spirit.

Another interesting short story could be about an elderly man who has lost his wife and is left feeling lonely and isolated. Through a chance encounter with a kind-hearted neighbor, he discovers a new purpose in life and learns to find joy in the simplest of things.

These types of stories not only entertain us but also teach us valuable lessons about life, love, and perseverance. They remind us that no matter how difficult our circumstances may be, there is always hope and the possibility of a better tomorrow.

This work doesn't come close to the remarkable collection of shorts found in 'The Night In Question'. However, it is still a good compilation.

Each short within this compilation has its own unique charm and offers something different to the reader.

Although it may not reach the same level of excellence as the aforementioned collection, it manages to engage and entertain.

The stories are well-written and the characters are developed to a certain extent.

There are moments of excitement, mystery, and even a touch of humor.

Overall, while it may not be a masterpiece, it is definitely worth a read for those who enjoy short stories.

It provides a pleasant diversion and showcases the talent of the various authors involved.

Kinda bland.

This description seems to suggest a lack of flavor or excitement. It could refer to a variety of things, such as food, a conversation, or a piece of writing.

When something is described as bland, it often means that it is lacking in the qualities that would make it interesting or engaging.

For example, a meal that is too plain or a story that lacks conflict may be considered bland.

However, what one person finds bland, another may find comforting or soothing.

It all depends on individual preferences and expectations.

In some cases, blandness can be a desirable quality, such as when it comes to certain medications or skincare products.

Overall, the term "kinda bland" is a subjective assessment that can vary from person to person.

It's important to consider the context and the individual's perspective when evaluating whether something is truly bland or simply not to their taste.

Probably a 3.5?

I really love his writing style. It has a unique atmosphere that draws you in and makes you feel as if you're in a different world. The subtlety in his work is also quite remarkable. However, sometimes it's so subtle that I don't really understand anything other than the overall vibe.

Maybe I'm not fully grasping the depth of his ideas or the hidden meanings within the text. But despite that, I still appreciate the beauty and artistry of his writing.

I find myself coming back to his works, hoping to uncover more of those subtleties and gain a better understanding.

Overall, while there are aspects that I struggle with, his writing style and atmosphere are enough to keep me engaged and interested.

I'm looking forward to seeing how his writing evolves and if I'll be able to pick up on more of those subtleties in the future.
