This is the straight-up best book I've ever read in my whole life. It somehow managed to beat out "The Things They Carried", which was also written by him and was previously the best book I'd ever read.

The moment I picked up this book, I was completely hooked. The author's writing style is so engaging and vivid that it brought every scene and character to life in my mind.

The story itself is a masterpiece. It's filled with complex emotions, deep themes, and unexpected twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

I can't recommend this book enough. It's a must-read for anyone who loves great literature. Whether you're a fan of the author's previous work or you're new to his writing, this book is sure to leave a lasting impression.

This is a truly remarkable piece of work that delves deep into the complex and often disturbing themes of trauma, deceit, and guilt. It forces the reader to confront the question of what it truly means to be a "good" or a "bad" person.

The exploration of these themes is both shocking and unnerving, yet it is also incredibly thought-provoking. The author has a keen understanding of the human psyche and is able to portray the characters' inner turmoil with great authenticity.

This is a novel that is not for the faint of heart. It requires the reader to engage with some difficult and uncomfortable ideas, but the rewards are well worth it. It is one of the most psychologically astute novels I have ever read, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a challenging and engaging read.

Overall, this is a brilliant work of literature that will stay with you long after you have turned the final page. It is a must-read for anyone who is interested in exploring the darker side of the human experience.

3.5. Summer reading with a group of kids can be a truly enriching experience.

Recently, we delved into a book that, while not quite on par with The Things They Carried, still very much had the essence of Tim O’Brien.

The story explored the war and its lasting effects, touching on profound themes such as innocence, guilt, what is taken from us, and how we persevere.

As we read together, the kids were engaged and seemed to be grappling with these complex ideas.

It was fascinating to see their reactions and interpretations.

We’ll be eager to hear what they really think once we’ve completed the book and had a chance to discuss it further.

I’m looking forward to the insights they’ll share and the conversations that will follow.

It’s moments like these that make summer reading with a group of kids so special and meaningful.
