However, I perused some reviews stating that the main event (getting trapped in a blizzard) doesn't take place until the halfway mark of the book, and then the story allegedly becomes really excellent. Well, it didn't, at least not from my perspective.

I continued reading in the hope that it would improve, but unfortunately, it failed to meet my expectations. The characters remained uninteresting, and the plot didn't develop in a way that engaged me. I was left feeling disappointed and unfulfilled by the end of the book.

Holy God, this was truly terrible.

I'm shocked that the same author who penned "Cacciato," "Lake in the Woods," and "The Things They Carried" could write this. I adored those works so much that I decided to read everything he had written. When I saw this book at a used book shop, I jumped at it, knowing nothing about it. Granted, it was his first work, and he probably had to refine his writing style and skills. But my goodness, is this bad.

I pat myself on the back for finishing it. I completely understand all the reviews here where people say they gave up after 50 or 100 pages. I just thought it had to get better, had to lead somewhere. I couldn't believe that Tim O'Brien could write a book that didn't develop and evolve as the pages turned. It got to the point where I was speed-reading, just skimming over the sentences, skipping the dialogue, and ignoring the second half of paragraphs that didn't seem to go anywhere.

Everything was so repetitive! I could skim through the book without worrying about missing anything because everything was repeated 20 times! The dialogue was atrocious, with characters repeating the same things over and over within a page, even within a single speech! The narration was also repetitive... The writing was dull, slow, and lacked any action, suspense, or plot. It was like O'Brien was trying to imitate Hemingway's style of understatement, but it just didn't work. The short, choppy sentences had no weight or significance, just bland, declarative statements.

The characters were flat and unrealistic. Why wasn't more done with the returning war vet and his demons? His drinking was mentioned, but nothing came of it. He never grew or changed, and none of the other characters had any real impact on him. The two female characters were equally uninteresting. Grace was treated poorly but acted like the perfect little housewife, even though she was supposed to be a professional teacher. And Addie made no sense at all. What was her role in the story? She was just there, flirting with Harvey when he was being stupid and running away when he was being serious.

And the plot! There was none! The first 100 pages were excruciatingly boring. Nothing happened. At least there was a hint of something with Harvey returning from war and readjusting to society, but that never became the main focus. Instead, the two brothers went to a ski competition and then decided to go home. That was the next 200 pages. So slow, long, and dull... And after all that, when they got back, the story just moved on like nothing had happened. There was no excitement from Grace or Addie, no bigger scene. The two brothers didn't do or say or learn anything. It was just the end.

The cover of my version has a blurb that says "The suspense is spellbinding." Sorry, Chicago Sun-Times, but your writer needs a reality check because this book does not contain even a shred of suspense. I'm all for character-driven dramas, but this had none of that. I was planning on reading all of O'Brien's works, but now I'm not so sure. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, knowing that this was his first work and seeing how he went on to achieve great success. But I just can't believe this book was published.

I'm really disappointed and hope that his other works are better than this.

I still don't know why I couldn't get into it, but I guess some things just aren't meant for me.
