Si me necesitas, llámame is the return from the grave to tell what was still left unfinished after death. Or maybe not. We will never know. We will never know if those stories were discards or not. What is certain is that several are related to others that were indeed published during his lifetime, but that was already common in Carver - or Ray, as his last wife seemed to call him. Because, after all, lives are similar.
In these five stories, the recurring themes in his work are dealt with, but not with the force that was characteristic of him. Still, they are readable. All are really dark, probably written in, or reminiscent of, his most alcoholic phase.
The story Leña takes its name from the protagonist's resource to combat depression. Qué queréis ver confronts two types of couples, without them realizing: the failed and the successful. In Sueños, the monotonous life of a couple is interrupted by a catastrophe. Vándalos narrates another catastrophe that gives rise to memories. And the story that gives its name to the anthology is a decaffeinated version of Caballos en la niebla.
Here concludes my journey through Carver's narrative. I don't know if one day I will go to his poetic work, as it doesn't generate the same interest in me. They were not pleasant stories to read, but his elegance captivated me and made me rethink some small details that were also present in my life.
It should be noted that Carver's writing style is often简约and spare, yet it has a certain power to draw the reader in. His exploration of the human condition, with all its flaws and uncertainties, is both poignant and thought-provoking. These five stories, although perhaps not his strongest, still offer a glimpse into his unique literary vision.
Maybe in the future, I will give his poetry a chance and discover another side of this talented writer. For now, I am left with the impression of his dark and often tragic stories, which have stayed with me long after I finished reading.
In conclusion, Carver's work is a testament to the power of literature to touch our hearts and minds, even when the subject matter is not always easy or comforting.
